The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has completed the construction of 220 flats for slum residents in Bagbazar, located near Sarada Ma’s residence, as part of the state’s Bangla House project. This project aims to improve the living conditions of slum dwellers by replacing informal, congested settlements with organized housing. Each flat includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a small balcony, offering residents basic amenities to enhance their quality of life.
Out of the 220 flats built, 100 have already been handed over to families, while 500 applications have been received for the remaining units. The flats are part of a larger initiative to transform slum areas into well-planned residential zones. The buildings have been constructed to a height of no more than 15 meters (approximately four stories), which complies with city building regulations.
The construction costs, including the provision of essential infrastructure such as water supply, electricity connections, roads, and drainage systems, have been fully covered by the state government. This project is part of a broader effort by the West Bengal government to address the issue of slums and provide more organized housing to urban populations living in informal settlements.
The flats have been constructed under the supervision of the Slum and Survey Departments, with the aim of relocating slum dwellers into these new units. The project spans multiple areas of Kolkata, with the Bagbazar development being just one example. More such developments are planned across the city to meet the growing demand for affordable housing.
